World Online Networking Day: Online vs Offline Business Networking!

29th October marks World Online Networking Day – which is a celebration of developing relationships and creating business opportunities through networking online across the world.

In this blog, we’re going to look at what exactly online networking is, and how it compares to offline networking. We’ll explore how each may help you, and how to network (both online and offline) effectively!

What is online and offline networking?

So, what does online networking mean? Online networking is the process of connecting with people and organisations that are associated with your industry or professional career in some way. For example, you might want to connect with individuals who can assist you on your career pathways or establish a relationship with a business that may need your support.

You can create these connections in multiple different ways! Setting up a professional profile on social media platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn are a great way to connect with professionals and businesses – and making sure you have a website, email, and phone number details on your page is essential for making contact with others.

On the other hand, offline networking refers to the process of building professional relationships and connections in person, rather than through digital platforms. These connections are more commonly made in conferences, workshops, and seminars. These events bring together professionals from your industry to share knowledge, showcase products or promote services.

These are perfect places for you to offline network – so keep a business card or a pen handy to hand out your details and jot down other peoples! Local events, such as fairs, exhibitions, or charity functions can also be great places for you to promote your services to the local community and create connections that may blossom in the future!

What are the benefits or drawbacks of online and offline networking?

Firstly, networking online can help you connect with more people over a wider area. The online world is unlimited – which means you can come across some huge opportunities that you may not find when networking in person. It also saves time and money – you don’t have to sit in the car or on the train to get to your meetings which means no travel expenses, and you’re left with a more open timetable when scheduling meetings!

However, offline networking emphasises personal interactions and can lead to deeper connections compared to online networking. Being able to chat in person does often foster stronger relationships, allowing for more genuine and trusting conversation. Meeting people in various physical settings can also lead to unexpected developments and collaborations that might not occur in a structured online setting.

It could be argued, however, that meeting online takes the pressure off. If you are someone who gets nervous when meeting new people, which is the case for many people who might have anxiety or stress disorders, you can break the ice with your new connection before meeting in person. As well as helping with mental disabilities, online networks can prove easier for people with physical disabilities too – those who struggle with mobility or chronic pain can still build those professional connections whilst prioritising their health in their own offices or home.

Offline networking also has the capacity to help those with disabilities. If you have difficulty reading verbal cues or verbal reactions, meeting in person gives you the opportunity to study nonverbal communication. Body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions can enhance a conversation, and help convey sincerity and engagement. These discussions allow for instant reactions and responses, facilitating dynamic and understanding chats.

Overall, both online and offline networking allow you to establish yourself as an authority in your field. The more connections you build, the more opportunities there are to strengthen your reputation within your industry. Fostering strong relationships with people and businesses in your career field will lead to referrals and job/project offers – which is perfect for furthering your career!

How do you build an online and offline network?

Now that you’ve set up online your profile or printed out your business cards – how do you build your network? Although offline and online networking are different in lots of ways, they have very similar approaches to building up a network.

The key is don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Don’t be afraid to interact with people’s posts as much as possible – and don’t be afraid to post frequently yourself! Liking and commenting on posts is a great way to build relationships with people on your timeline, as well as using strong calls to action and asking industry-related questions on your own posts. As for offline networking, don’t be afraid to attend local events or fairs, and don’t be afraid to approach people and tell them how your business might benefit them! Even creating leaflets to leave at local shops or to post around your neighbourhood – you never know where your next connection might come from!

Also - don’t be afraid to message someone for an online chat or ask for a in person meeting. Sending a friend request or posting a leaflet can sometimes feel impersonal, so explaining who you are and why you want to connect with this particular person feels more personal and genuine and is more likely to start up a conversation that leads to a meeting or a wider network of friends!

Once you have secured an in-person meeting or signed up to an online networking event, make sure you are prepared! Think about using a virtual background so you don’t have to stress about tidying your office or any kids/pets appearing around in the background. Make sure you are on time and dressed appropriately if you are meeting in person.

Do your research on the people or businesses involved in the meeting – what are their areas of expertise? What might they need help with? What can you offer them and vice versa? Make some notes that you can refer back to during your meeting – and have your own business information to hand so your mind doesn’t go blank when you are asked about yourself!

Also, remember that networking is about finding a community as well as professional help – it doesn’t have to all be serious! Think of some icebreakers and keep the conversation flowing, if you can establish a friendly atmosphere, you are more likely to stay in touch and grow your network!

And lastly, possibly the most important tip, is to always follow up on this meetings! Drop your new connection a message thanking them for their time or arrange a time for the next in person meeting – this way, you can keep the momentum growing and strengthen your network!
